Introducing Rugby

eric launches Rugby, a journal telling the greatest stories about the world’s greatest sport.

Rugby is a new journal that tells some of the game’s most intriguing, entertaining and engaging stories in a beautiful, premium publication.

Featuring exclusive, in-depth interviews and insightful tales that capture the spirit of rugby with every word and picture, Rugby is the first publication of its kind in the sport.

With no news, match reviews or previews in the journal, every feature aims to tell a unique story in the most engaging way possible, with big ‘storyteller’ intros, substantial, insightful reads and bespoke photography captured by non-typical photographers to give the title a unique feel.

Rugby cover

Wasps, England and British & Irish Lions flanker James Haskell features on the cover, shot exclusively for Rugby by Rick Guest, the photographer whose work includes portraits for the Royal Ballet, as well as shoots with David Beckham, Lionel Messi, Olympians, world-famous musicians and actors. “James is the perfect person to launch Rugby because few players have so many stories to tell,” explains Alex Mead, eric’s content director and editor-in-chief of Rugby. “He’s been loved and loathed and loved again, he’s played in France, Japan and New Zealand, and at all levels. He divides opinion but he’s brutally honest and that’s what we want.

Graham Dawe

“Graham Dawe is another incredible character. What player in even the professional era would train like he did? He set out a two-year, 700-session plan to play for England, while working on a farm. His story is very different to Haskell’s, but no less engaging.

“We want Rugby to be full of timeless stories that will still be as relevant in a year as they are now, so you don’t need to worry about having to read a feature before the relevant game takes place and ruins it all. It’s about savouring rugby, and celebrating the people that play it, coach it and watch it.”

Other features in Rugby include:

The man who once designed thermal nuclear rockets for NASA and is now using tech to try and unpick the dark side of the scrum.

How one rugby player ‘tripped up a cow’ and somehow ended up starting a fight against HIV in Swaziland, with rugby as his weapon of choice.

Why an English rugby club with a garden shed for a clubhouse is also one of the most pioneering with rugby’s most capped coaching team.

What happened after London Welsh’s revival hit its first stumbling block with a defeat just four games into life at level nine of the rugby pyramid.

British & Irish Lions nutritionist Jon Williams explains what it takes to fuel a player and how one managed to pile on four kilos of muscle – while recovering from a shoulder injury.

How a small town in the Czech Republic started a rugby revolution that saw an incredible 500-strong crowd turn up for its first game.

Other players talking exclusively in Rugby include England stars Charlie Hodgson, Rob Andrew and Simon Halliday, Georgia captain Merab Sharikadze, Doncaster Knight-turned-jeweller Chris Hallam, and Ed Jackson, who was left unable to walk after a tragic accident.

To make it even more collectible, the first edition of the 144-page journal has a limited print run. It’s available at selected independent stores and online, priced £10.
